 Birch Run, Michigan (Friday, May 15, 2009): For the Modifieds it was a bit of a throw back to yesteryear as they lined up to the do battle on the adjoining 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked paved oval for the first time since the end of the 2002 season for Round I of the Modifieds Short Track Series, a four race series for the Modifieds on Dixie’s short track.
17-year-old C.J. Harsen and 2003 Modifieds Track Champion, Matt Szecsodi sat on the front row for the 30-lap feature and it would be Szecsodi jumping out to take the lead on lap one. Travis Eddy, the son of seven-time ASA National Tour Champion, four-time Dixie Super Late Models Track Champion, and Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer, Mike Eddy, would make an amazing run to the front and found himself on on Szecsodi’s back bumper just five laps into the feature.
Eddy would eventually sneak under Szecsodi in turn three and would emerge from turn four the leader on lap eight. Eddy wouldn’t look back, as the Midland, Michigan stand out, who was behind the wheel of Dan Wieland's #88 Wieland Contracting Chevrolet checked out on the rest of the field en route to the Feature Win in Round I of the Modifieds Short Track Series and earning the Schaefer and Beirlein Dodge of Frankmenmuth Hard Charger of the Race Award in the process!
Birch Run's own, Robbie Johnson, in a rare appearance in a Modified, finished second while three-time Modifieds Track Champion, Todd Matheson nipped Fast Qualifier, Buck Harsen at the start / finish line for third. Szecsodi completed the Top Five.
Harsen set fast time on the 1/3 mile with a lap of 15.532 while Eddy took home the heat race win.
