Birch Run, Michigan (Sunday, June 7, 2009): The first of four scheduled Eve of Destruction events was going on at the Dixie Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 7th as a near capacity crowd was on hand to witness the carnage and destruction that occurred throughout the evening.
The visiting Midwest Classic Racers (M.C.R.) Dwarf Cars Series were also in attendance for their first of two appearances of the season. After they ran their heat races, it was time for the Exhibition Flagpole Race. The object of the race is to run a regular lap around the oval and then the competitors must navigate around a tractor tire located at the center of the start / finish line to complete a lap.
Lucas Lentner was the big winner of the Five-Lap Exhibition over the 12-car field and by overwhelming popular demand the Flagpole Race has been permanently added to the list of events for all future Eve of Destructions!
The Spectator Drags rolled out next as Jeff Brush, who just returned home from his second tour of duty in Iraq, beat out Wieland Contracting Modifieds Rookie driver, Bobby Goodrich in the best two out of three finals to score the win and the extra $100 for his efforts.
After the M.C.R. Dwarf Cars Feature, which was won by Craig Curtis, the Destruction really began as the Chain-Gang Races were up first. Due to the huge car count, 18 in all, two heat races were conducted to set the starting field. The object of a Chain-Gang Race is the front car, or truck, or van in some cases, pulls their teammate, who has no power, around the oval. When all was said and done, the team of Randy Miner and Andrew Bennett scored the win in the 12-lap Feature.
Up next were the Dixie Crash Cars and the scenario for this event is just the opposite of the Chain-Gang Race. The trailing teammate must push their partner around the oval in a 12-lap Feature. Due to the carnage of the Chain-Gang Race, 13 entries returned for the Dixie Crash Cars as the team of Josh DeLong and Tim Rose were victorious.
The two highlights of the evening rounded out the program as Eight School Busses rolled out for School Bus Figure 8s 12-Lap Feature. Ovid, Michigan veteran and School Bus Figure 8s ace, Phil Ehlert scored the popular win in his Ovid Iron and Metal behemoth as the School Bus Figure 8s veteran, one of the top SBF8 drivers in the Midwest, took the lead on Lap Five and dominated the rest of the way enroute to victory!
To complete the night, 21 drivers braved the elements that would be the Figure 8s Trailer Race! The object of the 12-lap Feature was to keep your trailer attached at all costs while negotiating around the inner Figure 8 track! After all the destruction was complete, just four teams finished with Jim Rifki, in a Van with a Boat attached, claimed victory.
The next Eve of Destruction is set for Sunday, July 5th. School Bus Figure 8s, a Figure 8 Trailer Race, a Chain-Gang Race, Dixie Crash Cars, the Flagpole Race, and Spectator Drags all highlight the evening.
Also on the card will be the Vintage Racing Organization of America (V.R.O.A.) Modifieds and a non-points Street Stocks Invitational to finish off the Fourth of July holiday weekend! For the Street Stocks Invitational, it will be a non-points race, however all teams on hand will receive 15 Show-Up Points for participating.
