In one of the closest points battles in the tracks’ 61-year history, Ed Newman Jr. repeated as Track Champion in 2009 to go with his 2008 title and he did it despite missing one night due to a ruptured appendix and withstanding strong challenges from Curtis Hayden, Maverick Morrow, and Josh Hahn on Season Championship night to repeat as champion and he did so by just three points!
The 34-year-old driver of the Zervan Masonry Chevrolet Camaro became the first driver to score back to back champions in the Street Stocks division since Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer, the late Tommy Bowles accomplished the feat in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Newman Jr., picked up a single feature win in his 11 starts in 2009, which came on May 22nd, in addition, he also scored nine Top Five showings and all 11 starts were at least a Top 10 showing. He also collected seven Fast Qualifier Awards and one Heat Race Win.
His green and yellow #x5 carried sponsorship all season long from; Adrian’s Auto Care, Tri-County Roofing, Stoddard Homes, Montrose Bowling Alley, Leonard’s Auto Works, R.P.M. Auto Sales, Supreme Signs, Double B Stables, Roxy’s Diner, Reinike Racing Engines, Scooby Doo Racing, and Jack Bill.
Hayden finished second by those three markers while collecting one Feature Win. Morrow, who also scored a single feature win, finished just a single point back of Hayden in third while Hahn was fourth, 15 points behind Morrow. Al Boitel Jr. (2 Feature Wins) completed the Top Five.
Dewey Romans Jr., finished sixth as Aaron Spearling, 2007 Track Champion, Mike Walther (3), Jason Hitsman (1), and Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame driver, Jay Woolworth (1) were the Top 10. Ed Newman Sr., who filled in for his son when he missed a night, and John Zawacki collected feature wins while finished outside of the Top 10.
Spearling won the 2009 Rookie of the Year title while Newman Jr., backed up his repeat championship performance with the Schaefer-Bierlein Dodge of Frankenmuth Hard-Charger Award. Hayden won the Car and Crew Award as Morrow was the Most Improved Driver and Hahn won the Sportsman of the Year Award.
